OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

LA PEROUSE BAY

Earth and ocean merge at La Perouse Bay with a raw, desolate beauty that’s almost eerie. Historians originally thought Maui’s last volcano eruption occurred in 1790, but recent analysis indicates the lava flow occurred about 200 to 300 years earlier. Before the blast, the ancient Hawaiian village of Keoneʻoʻio flourished here, and its remains – mainly house and heiau platforms – are scattered among the lava patches.

In 1786 renowned French explorer Jean François de Galaup La Pérouse became the first Westerner to land on Maui. As he sailed into the bay here, scores of Hawaiian canoes came out to greet him. A monument to the explorer is at the end of the road at La Perouse Bay. A lava-rock monument in his honor marks the entrance to the bay area.

From the volcanic shoreline look for pods of spinner dolphins in the bay early in the day. Strong offshore winds and rough waters rule out swimming, but the land is fascinating to explore.

2Activities

Located just before the road ends, Makena Stables offers a morning horseback ride and a sunset tour. Both travel along the rocky lava coast and climb up into the ranchlands. Groups size limited to five people. Must be at least 13 years old to ride.
